Course
Purpose/Objectives:
This course will cover computer concepts that are relevant and useful to individuals that will use computers on a regular basis. In addition students are required to complete Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) Certification preparation exams in Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint.
A minimal amount of class time will be devoted to Word; students are expected to work independently on this material.
Significant amounts of class time will be devoted to Excel and developing logic that gives students problems.
A moderate amount of time will be allocated to Access and PowerPoint.
A website will be developed by each student.
Students are encouraged to use computer resources that are available to them at home or at other locations. Students can install SAM materials on multiple machines that maybe available to them and that have internet connections. Students that do not have access to a PC can use any WSC Labs in either Bates or Wilson Halls.
Prerequisite:
None
Keyboard literacy is helpful
Text/Materials:
·
Text: Excel 2003 & SAM disks, purchased at bookstore.
·
CD’s: Contained
in the wrapping of your text should be one additional CD. One CD is contained
in a folder that says SAM on the cover.
·
Text Casegrader in bookstore with SAM Disks.
·
All students are
required to have one San Disk “cruzer mini” for data
storage that connect to computers using USB Port, this device is also referred
to as a thumbdrive , or jumpdrive,
or have some way to transfer large graphic files.
Exams:
Exams are given during a period of
time and are taken on a computer (you can install the necessary software from
the materials you purchased or use WSC lab); example of a time period would be
Feb 3 – Feb 10. Students complete their exam at any convenient time during this
period. Keep in mind, the exam period is monitored by a computer, if you wait
until
Before starting an exam make certain you have sufficient time to complete it, at the beginning of each exam it will be clearly noted the maximum allowable time for an exam. I would suggest you not start an exam if you only have an hour in between classes to complete. You will be closed out of an exam and graded when the allowed time expires.
Students have the option of taking all exams many times in an effort to improve their grade.
Teaching Methods:
Materials are presented as a path:
A path is either:
Evaluation
Exam – Training – Post Exam
or
Training
The Exam is the only grade that counts toward your final average.
Registering and
Using
The Institutional Code for
Westfield State College using SAM is S3467351, you
need this only the first time you log onto SAM.
User Name:
I recommend you use the first letter of your first name and your last name. ex. GMerlo
Password:
Use something you will remember and not be embarrassed if I have to lookup, should you forget. Write down what you are using for a password.
To listen to Audio in the classroom:
Bring your personal headphones from you CD player or other device and plug into the front of the system box.
When you enter SAM, assignments should automatically be selected, if not select the assignments tab. On the screen you will see the date assignments are available to students. If the assignment is available select the name of the assignment, the assignment will load.
The lower right corner of the screen contains the options:
Prepare Observe Practice Apply
Prepare is the default, this means when you enter SAM prepare is already selected. Prepare tells you about the task that will be presented.
Observe provides you with video and audio that presents to you the actual lesson. After selecting the observe option you need to select the play button ( › ) to start.
Practice is interactive, requires you to take some action as you move through each step in the process. I find practice very helpful on the more complex requirements or when confused about what is being asked.
Apply gives you the opportunity to demonstrate your comprehension of the material. I receive a detailed report on each student that indicates your success rate with apply. If you are unsuccessful with apply return to either observe or practice and attempt apply again, you can do this as many times as necessary to complete the materials.
As you complete a task using Apply, SAM will move to the next task. If you want to skip a task you can select the view all option button, all tasks will be displayed and you can move between tasks by selecting them.
You do not have to complete all training tasks at one time in an assignment. You can exit SAM during any training session; SAM will bookmark what you have completed and return you to the next task that you have not completed.
Exams must be completed when you start an exam, exams are not limited in time. If you take the exams in the computer labs be sure to stay aware of the 15 minute log off.
Course Policies:
Missed
Classes: (non-online students) Students
are allowed 3 absences. NO reason nor excuses are necessary, after 3 the number
of absences will start to accumulate. No reason nor excuses are acceptable or required. After 3 your
grade will start to be affected after the first 3. The student is responsible for obtaining
material distributed on class days when he/she was absent. This can be done
through contacting a classmate who was present or by contacting the instructor
during office hours or other times. Missed or late quizzes can not be made up
under any circumstances but with good cause and adequate notice, an
early quiz may be given. One quiz (lowest score) will be dropped at the end of
the semester.
Assignments: All assignments are due at the beginning of class on the date due. Late submission of assignments will be assessed a penalty of 10% per day. No exceptions are made.
Group
Work While Group collaboration and problem solving is encouraged,
duplication of work is not. Submission of the same files will not be accepted.
Academic
Dishonesty: Plagiarism and cheating
are serious offenses and may be punished by failure on exam, paper or project;
failure in course; and or expulsion from the University. For more information
refer to the "Academic Dishonesty" policy in the University
Undergraduate Catalog.
Need for Assistance: If you have any condition, such as a physical or learning disability, which will make it difficult for you to carry out the work as I have outlined it, or which will require academic accommodations, please notify me as soon as possible.
Posting of Grades: Grades are posted on line using the last six digits of your student identification number. If you want me to use any other number I will be glad to, submit your request in writing with the number you desire, include your name, and section number.
Maintain copies:
Students are required to maintain hard copy and digital copies of all assignments submitted.
Student Progress:
Individual student progress is monitored on-line. You must complete assignments and exams within the time frame specified, you may be dropped from the class if assignments are not completed on time. Students are required to attend all classes, a maximum of three cuts are permitted, beyond this number you may be dropped from the class.
Should technical difficulties develop that prevent students from completing assignments the students will not be held responsible. Students are accountable for actions that are clearly within their ability to control. However, waiting to complete a week’s assignment in the last hour before it is do is impossible whether technical difficulties develop or not, students must demonstrate reasonable effort on a daily basis.
The software being utilized tracks student progress carefully and provides extensive detail regarding exercises you have attempted, questions completed properly or skipped, how long you took to work on a particular assignment, if you tried a question and were unsuccessful. In essence the reports I receive are very comprehensive. If you do poorly on an exam, please do not embarrass yourself by claiming to have done well on all assignments if this is not true.
Upon completion of this course all students will be prepared to take the Microsoft Office User Specialist Certification Exams for Word, Excel, and Access.
Hints:
You may be familiar with some of the materials in the basic assignments; however, upon completion of this course, you should find that you have increased your knowledge of the applications substantially. I suggest that all students keep the following suggestions in mind:
Start with training:
When training, use the apply option first (especially using basic skills), if you try the task and are unable to complete it, select observe, the program will immediately change from apply to observe, observe provides video and audio instruction on the task your attempting, when observe is complete, select apply again and complete the task. You get credit for completion only if you complete the task using the option apply.
On advanced topics that you are not
familiar with, start with observe.
